Benefits

CTD has a number of benefits that can help unlock the potential of wells, navigating the reservoir quickly and accurately, often increasing the ROP and delivering increased returns to the operator.

The two main drivers for using Coiled Tubing Drilling are:

1. The Reduced Total Cost Of Operation

A number of factors help reduce the cost of CTD operations, which can be as much as 30-40%, including:

  • the reduced rig time (through quicker deployment and drilling rates)
  • the speed of mobilisation, particularly when used for multi-well operations in close proximity
  • the reduced preparation requirements (no need to pull the tubing in some re-entry operations, smaller footprint, no access roads required etc)

2. Underbalanced Drilling

This is the process of maintaining the pressure in the wellbore below that of the formation. With no joints to make up, CTD facilitates continuous drilling and pumping, allowing pressures to be easily maintained and ensures underbalanced conditions 100% of the time. In some drilling operations this is vital where there is low well pressure or to protect the formation and maintain the integrity of the well. It can also enable the well to continue to produce whilst drilling and can in some cases increase the ROP. These and additional benefits are summarized below:
